Journeying Through Food in Love

$14 for two days seems like a lot

This was this "week's" grocery haul:

It looks like very little, because it is, as I'll be flying out to the Midwest on Wednesday morning, so no use mounding up earthly treasures in New York for just two days. But this was a bit over $14, sort of ridiculous for the time at hand, though sure, I'm not using all the butter, or peanut butter, or (probably) all the garlic, or possibly all the sausage. I'm definitely drinking all the milk before I leave though. Perhaps the sour cream, too, if I can find a pretense. Those sausages, though... they were on sale at Aldi for $1.99, so an easy buy. Looking at receipt once I got home though, I realized... they had rung up at full price, more like $4.69 or something. I was crushed, if only for a second before putting it all in perspective. No wonder it had all come out to be a bit more than I expected. I was angling for "just a bit over ten". Lesson learned. Watch that screen at the checkout like a hawk!

For breakfast I toasted up some of the fancy bread from before in some butter, spread some sour cream on it, and topped it with diced garlic---yum! That bread benefits so much from a good toasting that I waited to eat breakfast until I was back from Aldi. I had been out of butter.

For "lunch" I reheated my remaining Bubble and Squeak (refried potatoes and cabbage) from a few days ago (last week?) in more butter than I did the first time, and this time I made sure to listen to see if it really squoke. It squoke, yet bubbled not. It was really quite good in any case.

Dinner was red lentils but with the welcome additions of big chunks of sausage. I was liberal with the dairy in the lentils---butter and extra sour cream---so it was much more filling than usual. I ate it while watching some Al-Jazeera derivative channel talk about the Balfour Declaration (I think was it, anyway). Eating while listening to barely-intelligible Arabic has become an evening ritual.

Tomorrow I may be out most of day so I'll have to get creative in using up what food I have to use up before I go. Sounds like a problem for tomorrow's me!
