Journeying Through Food in Love

Full at last

I haven't had a day as mentally draggy as today since I got done being repeatedly sick a few months ago. But I wasn't sick today; just a little hungry and way underslept. Maybe "way hungry" would be more accurate.

I cooked my soaked buckwheat this morning and tried toasting it. I learned I really need to do those steps in reverse order. The wet groats didn't dry out and then toast; they just smushed all over the bottom of the pan into a stubborn crust. Maybe that crust toasted a bit, though, becuase when all was said and done, it was certainly better than the day before; there were some bites, especially towards the end, where I could almost taste glimpses of deliciousness when the grassy sensation faded. So perhaps once they are fully toasted (dry!) it will taste less like eating weeds.

Then I schlepped my heavy-than-normal backpack across three trains to school, then to a job interview, all 1.75 hours of which went really well, and finally back home, dragging myself sometimes painfully along the whole way. I forced myself to the neighborhood library to pick up a book, which they didn't have, but I settled for a different one (remind me to rave about the library sometime! It's so great!). On the walk back I stopped inside the biggest local grocery store, which I somehow haven't visited yet since I moved here!?!? It was not notably inexpensive but had a huuuge selection of things, much more than I am used to in a single store around here. I still had four dollars left to spend, and I didn't have plans for that money until I walked inside and was hit with a wall of fresh bakery smell, and, right inside the door, a wall of bread. Resistance was futile! I hadn't acquired any bread, or any cook-free food, yet this week.

I brought them home, toasted one with butter, and wolfed it down with joy and gratitude.

I decided at today's dinner I needed to adequately refeed to make it through the week. I loved yesterday's dinner so much I couldn't wait to repeat it, just with wonderfully absorbent rice instead of potatoes---the better for soaking up sauce with---and with two drumsticks instead of one. And I added the mushrooms I have, too. It was way too good.

I'm full and happy and ready to get more than 5-6 hours of sleep, at last!
