Glimpsing the future
I am glad I started my fiscal week on a Monday. Otherwise, I would have eaten half my food on Sunday when I was feeling festive, and then starved through the rest of the week.
Tomorrow is Sunday, and the end of my first fiscal cycle. It was a good cycle. I have felt really, shockingly good considering I was an unintentional vegetarian all week. So many lentils has been slightly hard to digest but nothing debilitating. Anyway, it will be lentils again tomorrow, whether I want it or not, unless I look down and see a $100 Fogo de Chão gift card on the sidewalk coming home from Mass. Fortunately, I saved an onion, so I have a way of making Sunday special, still. And I rationed my delicious butter-toastable pitas to have plenty for tomorrow as well.
But NOW WHAT? By the end of tomorrow I'll still have
- some lentils
- 2.5 heads of garlic
- one white onion
- Tons of turmeric
- Tons of Kashmiri chili powder
- A lot of cumin seeds
I do want variety next week (as well as some meat!) but I also want to be able to use what I have instead of totally changing tracks. I still want to be working through my chili powder, which I am starting to kind of look forward to. And I might as well finish the lentils. I'm not trying to warehouse them. But I would like to dress them up a little differently.
Things I'm thinking about:
- tomatoes, or the paste thereof: the internet says this is a great addition to masoor dal (the Indian lentils I have)
- cilantro, because ditto
- cardamom
- some kind of oaty thing like... oats... or cracked wheat or barely. Basically experimenting with a grain different than bread (I understand "bread" is not a grain, bear with me)
- A lemon or something would be nice.
- It would be nice to start doing things with rice, which is a good peasant staple, though I probably don't need rice and a different grain.
- Some meat, even if it's just a pound. Maybe I could work ground beef into my remaining lentil meals.
We'll see where things go! Reach out with suggestions any time!
