Journeying Through Food in Love

Paging brown bits

I was so monumentally tired after travelling today (starting at 2:30am) that I didn't think I would even be able to cook anything. I thought I would just go to bed hungry at 4:30pm. Fortunately by some miracle I rallied, was able to cook, and of course now that's it a reasonable bedtime I am far more energetic.

I had a rare independent eating-out foray this morning in the Cincinnati airport. Skyline Chili was open at 5am serving---who knew this was a thing---breakfast chili. My several years in the Cincy area did endear me to this strange culinary mashup of chili, noodles, and mountains of grated cheese. Now they were offering it over hashbrowns instead of noodles. I was too curious (and, hungry) not to give it a try. It was good. Most things with as much grated cheese as they give you could only be good.

Once I got done lying on top of my bed too tired to move, I returned to cooking through my supply of cheap drumsticks. I wanted something simple and fast, so I didn't use any onions. I just browned the drumsticks in butter, threw some minced garlic in there towards the end, then poured in some chicken broth and put the lid on, but not before also adding a lot of vinegar. I really like my earlier experiment with vinegar. So I thought, why not?

And it wasn't too bad, though whatever I did precluded the development of much in the way of brown bits to scrape off. Also, having all that vinegar in the pan made the sauce very, well, vinegary. I added a lot of half and half until it was proportional not quite so acidic. It worked. It was good. Not the best sauce I ever made, but I was and am too tired to care too much. That fact that I cooked at all feels like a victory.
