Journeying Through Food in Love

Spontaneous wonderful breakfast hash

I promised yesterday no more buckwheat for breakfast, which I'm glad of, as I would have defaulted to it this morning otherwise. Only because I wrote that off ahead of time, I remembered: potatoes! Those are a breakfast food, obviously! I've had them and buckwheat in somewhat inverted positions lately.

I just pulled things out of the fridge that I thought would go well with potatoes. Butter, obviously; sour cream, obviously; garlic (in almost every meal); mushrooms; little tomatoes; cilantro.

Cilantro is the only herb I have right now or I would think harder about what herb goes with what kind of food. I appreciate being able to simply experience what everything tastes like with cilantro. Some things (most things) it seems to go well; others (I thought the drumsticks) not so much. It was fantastic on potatoes.

As everything was wrapping up, I poured a bunch of vinegar on it, remembering how it was helpful last night, and then stared into my cabinet hoping to be inspired to grab something. I was: the turmeric. I opened the lid and sniffed it and wondered if I wanted that smell in my mouth this morning. I decided probably did. I sprinkled on just a little and tossed the potatoes a little more. Then I poured it all in a bowl...

...and topped it with some sour cream.

WOW!

I was not expecting it to taste THAT good! I was disciplining myself not to "cheat" by just drizzling soy sauce on it, and so I didn't, so my expectations were middling. But all the different flavors, with the brightness of the vinegar, combined with the light turmeric and especially the sour cream... oh wow. It had that gobble-it-all-right-now urgency to it. The potatoes themselves were a little undercooked as after yesterdays mushy potatoes, I was being too careful not to overcook them. But small matter. Or small potatoes, we could say.

For my little lunch I had the Bubble and Squeak! that I mentioned yesterday: potatoes mixed with cabbage reheated in butter until a little golden. It was nice! If not dramatically beautiful.

Dinner was nothing fancy---just a routine bowl of masoor dar with a lot of chili powder in the sauce. Simple but scintillating!

I am starting to ration out my butter, my only cooking oil right now. The left side is for Sunday, when I want to be more decadent. The right side has to suffice for today and tomorrow.

I'll live.
