Journeying Through Food in Love

Venting my spleen

There was just some bile on one of the livers, that's all.

I managed to save up enough food to have proper Sunday-sized portions today, which gladdened my hungry little heart. I had toast and cream cheese with some potato and onion hash for lunch --- good but lacking some color --- and more onion+garlic+liver+rice for dinner. Just four livers today instead of two. It's fun to feel full again.

I also made a "salad" for dinner, after yesterday's adventure in reinventing it inspired me. I chopped the lettuce this time, didn't cook it, and tried to make croutons out of the bread instead of sandwichizing the whole thing. I say "tried" because the oven doesn't work and I was trying to toast them in the same pan that the onions were cooking in. It didn't work well so I wound up with a lot soggy bread but the flavor, if not the texture, was nice. I sliced up dabs of cream cheese and pretended it was that cheese they put in salads. Haha I'm not sure what cheese that is. Not cream cheese, I know that. But it was good. I spooned some of the hot onions and garlic into the salad and poured some soy sauce, vinegar, and a bit of shaoxing wine... maybe that wasn't very sophisticated. It was flavorful enough to enjoy, however.

I soaked the livers and the rice, separately, this time, for many many hours before cooking them. I couldn't tell much of a difference, although, the soaking having thrown off the water-absorbing properties of the rice, the rice was a little less perfect this time. But maybe I got more nutrients out of it? The livers, again, were tolerably edible, and the rest of the dish was great. I ate leisurely while watching some Arab guy talk about the geopolitics of Ethiopia building a dam on the Nile and what that means for Egypt. I only understood 3% or less of what he said, but remarkably, I actually learned a fact: the Nile splits at its upper (southern) end into the White Nile and the Blue Nile. At least I think I learned that. I haven't corroborated that; I am just pretty sure that was the meaning of the words I heard and the infographic I saw.

Tomorrow brings a new $40! Oh joy!
